lolita dress truly gained a foothold in the 1990s. In the early part of the decade, visual kei—or visual style—rock was gaining popularity in Japan. The musicians in this genre were known for their artistic flair and flamboyant clothing styles. While they were developing costumes for their vibrant performances, they began incorporating elements that came to be known as Gothic lolita dress, namely all dark colored clothing with innocent-looking, hyper-feminine hair and makeup. As these artists adopted elements of the style that became the predecessor of lolita dress today, fans began to imitate them, and soon the on-stage styles of rock idols emerged on the street.
lolita dress is an interesting fashion, in that there is an incredible variety of styles within it: so much so that it is very easy for a newbie to become overwhelmed. I have often seen questions of this nature: Can I be lolita dress if I don’t like too much lace? Am I a “real” lolita dress if I only like Punk lolita dress? Do I have to choose only one style and stick with it forever? Can I wear Sweet and Gothic style together?
